The SYMBIOS project will produce a set of open-access outputs to support professionals, companies, and stakeholders in industrial symbiosis and the circular economy. All materials will be freely available as downloadable multilingual PDFs under Creative Commons 4.0 Share Alike.
The main deliverables planned by the project schedule are the following:
Deliverables of WP 2:
Research and Industrial Symbiosis Models
Work Package 2 focuses on research and the development of industrial symbiosis models in the agri-food and leather/fashion sectors.
Focus Groups
Two focus groups per sector will be organised to analyse current environmental management systems, types of waste generated, waste management practices, and trends in industrial symbiosis. The results will help identify key research topics for the subsequent needs analysis.
Needs Analysis
Based on 60 interviews and surveys with international stakeholders (30 per sector), the analysis will map resource availability and potential cross-sector exchanges, assessing opportunities for building symbiotic networks and sustainable collaboration models.
Sectoral Reviews
Comprehensive reports will summarise field research findings and review relevant scientific literature, including EU and national legislation for each sector, providing insights into the implementation of industrial symbiosis practices.
Symbiosis Models
Two sector-specific models will be developed, one for agri-food and one for leather/fashion, illustrating how industrial symbiosis can be implemented and which waste streams or resources can be repurposed by other sectors. The models will also identify the skills and knowledge required for professionals, graduates, and individuals undergoing reskilling or upskilling.
All outputs will be available as open access resources on the official Symbios website (Creative Commons 4.0 Share Alike license).
Deliverables of WP 3:
Digital Platform and Community Tools
The Symbios Digital Platform is a hub for information, continuous training, and professional networking on industrial symbiosis. It consists of two main sections:
- Learning Section – SYMBIOS MOOC
Open and free online courses for self-paced learning on industrial symbiosis within the Green & Circular Economy. The MOOC includes a general introductory section and two sector-specific modules (agri-food and leather/fashion), each with four comprehensive learning units. - Community Section
An open and interactive database of stakeholders, best practices, and symbiosis opportunities. Users can register their organisations, share available or needed resources, search for partners, and foster cross-sector collaborations across countries and industries.
Testing & Dissemination
Replicable formats will be developed for pilot events and final presentations, designed to showcase the platform, collect feedback from stakeholders, and assess the scalability of the Symbios model.
